Paul Hillson

Musical Director

Paul began his musical studies at the age of twelve on the cornet, taught by his father – himself a noted cornet soloist and conductor within the Salvation Army. A year later, he also took up the piano, and both instruments have played a central role in his musical journey ever since.

His formative years were rooted in the Salvation Army at Hadleigh Temple Corps, where he played in the Young People’s Band, senior band and sang in the Songsters. He went on to conduct the Young People’s Band, accompany the youth choir and later conduct the Songsters, experiences that gave him a strong foundation in both performance and leadership.

Alongside his banding, Paul has worked as a teacher for over thirty years. He is an accomplished pianist, cornetist, arranger and a published composer with the Salvation Army. In October 2023, he was appointed Musical Director of The Southend Band, where he brings his wealth of experience, energy and passion for brass banding to the role.
